Atomic layer deposition offers new ways to improve the performance of Li-ion batteries. ALD coatings have been applied in Li-ion batteries on electrodes and separators, and as solid state electrolytes. The ALD films improve capacity, power density, cycle life, rate capability and cycling performance of lithium-ion battery packs.
Very thin Al2O3 passivation layers improve also the capacity retention of lithium-ion batteries. For example a physical protecting barrier layer with an ultra-thin ALD layer deposited on the cathode has been tested to improve battery stability by suppressing side-reactions between the electrode and the electrolyte.
The demonstrated benefits include improved P/E ratio, reduced impedance, higher residual capacity after 500 cycles and increased cycling resistance. High aspect ratio elecrodes can also substantially improve the capacitance of supercapacitors.
