Glass Coloration

nCOLOR™ - Beneq aerosol coatings for glass coloring

nHALO®, one of the two Beneq aerosol coating technologies, has proven its potential for coloring glass in the glass industry. The color produced by nHALO is vivid, durable and chemically stable. In fact, the color is not produced as a coating on the glass, but as a surface doping or modification in the topmost region of the glass surface. This is possible due to the nanometer size of the colorant particles and the process temperature. It is safe to say that the color will last as long as the glass itself.

A major benefit of nHALO-based nCOLOR™ glass coloring, when compared to body-tinted glass, is that it enables change of color with the simple change of raw materials being fed to the process. This means minimal change-over time for different colors and no need for color-dedicated glass furnaces.

Beneq nCOLOR can be applied to most known glass types, including soda-lime-silicate (float  and patterned), borosilicate, lead crystal and fused silica glass. The range of colors available comprises both ionic (solution) and colloidal colors, including different hues of, e.g., blue, gray, bronze and yellow. The blue color in is an ionic color achieved with oxides of cobalt (Co), whereas yellow is colloidal, derived from elemental silver. Coloring with nHALO is easy, because the chemistry of the color can be the same as in conventional body-tinted glass, only the coloring method is different.
